About
If you love talking about pop culture, thinking intersectionally, and listening to Canadian best friends make one another laugh, then Material Girls is for you!
In each episode, queer academics Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman look at a piece of pop culture through a materialist lens. They ask:
Why was this popular?
What was happening at the time that fomented its success?
What theory might support our investigation?
And most importantly, what can we understand about our culture by understanding the rise of certain books, tv shows, songs, phrases, people, brands, etc. ?

“The idea of Material Girls is great because they’re able to start in a more grounded space and use the material hook to lead into the hot takes and heady conversations.”
