Frequently Asked Questions

Did you know that you’re using “erstwhile” incorrectly?

Yes

Then why do you keep doing it?

We think we’re funny.

How do I pitch an episode idea?

You can pitch us an idea at this handy Google Form! We used to accept pitches over Twitter and Instagram and while it’s fun to hear from you that way, it’s a little hard for us to keep track! Use this form to ensure we see your pitch. :)

How can you in good conscience make a Harry Potter podcast in 2022?

Witch, Please is a space for people who have been really hurt and betrayed by Rowling’s actions and words, but still care about the books! The idea is that people can find a space in which these books are allowed to still matter to them, but with a critical perspective that recognizes its faults and failures.

Here’s an excerpt from an article in Vancouver Sun where Hannah says more on this: “You read books that are problematic all the time. You read books by problematic authors all the time. You read things to critique them. You read things to think about them. So that part is fine. I have no problem reading a book or thinking about a book that is by somebody that is a troubling public figure or a dangerous public figure. What I worry about is contributing to or endorsing a fandom that puts money in her pocket.”

For that reason, as a podcast we boycott all new work coming from the Harry Potter franchise with the assumption that our viewership/support only furthers JKR’s reach — which we are not interested in contributing to.

How do you choose what topics you’re going to cover?

Mostly through deep discussion in our production meetings. We are committed to using theory as the basis for each episode so the first two questions when an interesting topic comes up are 1) have we done this before? 2) What theory can help us tackle it?

I’ve just started listening; do you ever talk about [insert very specific thing here]?

We only vaguely remember our own episodes. Your best bet is to listen to them all, and then tell us if we talk about it.

Will you come visit my town/university/expo/home?

We can’t afford to travel on our own dime. If you have a way to pay our transportation and accommodation, and we can fit it into our busy lady-scholar schedules, we’d love to visit you!

How do you decide what to put on the public feed vs. the Patreon-only feed?

Great question! We want to keep our highly-produced, prepped and deeply thought-out episodes available to all our listeners! Our Patreon is where we host bonus content we create based on what our fans want from us. There you will find goofy Q&As (called #WitchPleaseTellMe eps) and bonus interviews that are not necessarily academic in nature. Our Patreon is part behind-the-scenes content and party whimsy (if we have a whim, we follow it!).

Aside from Patreon, how else can I support Witch, Please?

We LOVE getting reviews on Apple Podcasts. Reviews are fun and make us feel nice, and they drive new listeners to the show. Plus, when we get a 5-star review, we read the username out loud at the end of our next episode — and that’s a joy for all involved.

How is it possible to be as smart, charming, and beautiful as you two are?

Magic.
